More than Hot Air: The Best Mega Hair Dryers
by Ana Dragovic

Programmable touch screens, ionic generators, sports-car engineering, a quiet motor that cuts drying time in half—and might even help to reduce your carbon footprint. Hair dryers have gone decidedly high-tech.

Environmental awareness and gadget envy aside, though, does any of it really make a difference to your hair? “Absolutely,” says Tim Rogers, a New York stylist and creative director for Living Proof. Rogers blames inadequate dryers—namely those with weak airflow—for causing hair damage: “Heat is one of the biggest causes of breakage, so a dryer that’s just producing a lot of heat without a lot of blast is contributing to that problem,” he says. But that’s not the only feature that counts: The innovative ionic element in many modern dryers, which helps to seal the cuticle for a smoother, frizz-free blowout, has been upgraded in the latest models with the option of turning it on and off. The benefit? “A dryer that can create different looks,” says Tommy Buckett, a stylist at Manhattan’s Marie Robinson Salon... “Sleek and smooth one day, big and textured the other. It’s all about versatility.”

The Smart One. Equipped with the Ionic Intel System, which differentiates between positive and negative ions, this dryer lets you customize your style—from volumizing fine hair to smoothing out thick or coarse hair—with the flip of a switch. A bonus: The cluster of ceramic spheres act as an air purifier, removing carbon dioxide from the outgoing airflow. $240; onestyling.com

ONE offers stylists infinite creations, one solution

In 2003, after recognizing an increasing consumer demand for heated styling tools at his family’s beauty supply store, David Kim launched FHI Heat. Over the next eight years, he and his team quickly grew that collection of high-end professional styling appliances to one of the leaders in the prestige segment of the tool category.

Last year, after a falling out with FHI’s investors, David, along with key members of his management team, left the company he founded and created ONE, a company that offers the next generation of advanced styling tools. Beauty Industry Report (BIR) is delighted to share the story of the renaissance of this entrepreneur with our readers. BIR: Welcome back, David. Please tell BIR’s readers what’s been happening since you left FHI Heat.

David Kim: Thanks, Mike. It’s been a fast and wild ride, that’s for sure. In a matter of just a few months, we’ve created an entire fullservice tool company, backed by a compelling marketing campaign and top notch education. When I decided to launch a new appliance line last year, we studied the market and realized that the tool category had become overcrowded and commoditized, with a lot of uninspired brands with no point of difference. I knew if I were to launch a new line, I’d have to raise the bar for both stylists and their clients. Leveraging my connections and friendships in the industry, we partnered with the top manufacturers and technology providers to push technology and innovation to a new level of excellence. We knew we would have to create something that stood out from the crowd. We did just that and we called it ONE. BIR: That’s a unique name. What’s its significance?

DK: ONE's mission is captured in its tagline: "infinite creations. one solution." We celebrate the diversity and creativity in the hair industry, and want to be the one unifying force that allows stylists to work their magic. We support stylists by providing the tools, the education and the inspiration to unleash their creativity. Our marketing campaign will be stylist-focused and stylist-generated, showcasing the infinite looks they can create using our tools. BIR: How are you communicating that message and breaking through the clutter?

What Moves Him

03 mar launchpad pg66 close          WHAT MOVES HIM

A passion for technology, creativity and even race cars helps fuel David Kim’s drive to create the best tools on the market.

Sure, it’s a common story: Parents own beauty supply store, son helps out on the weekends, a love of the beauty biz results. But if there’s anything else that’s common about David Kim, president and CEO of hot tool manufacturer ONE Styling (onestyling.com), we haven’t found it. “In 2003, I was building an e-commerce website for my parents’ store and noticed an explosion in ceramic flat iron sales,” Kim recalls. But rather than simply ordering extra irons, Kim decided to manufacture his own. “I partnered up with a top flat iron factory in Korea and started selling irons door-to-door to salons and from a six-foot folding table at trade shows.” The brand? Oh, you may know it as the instant hit FHI Heat. Last year, Kim, along with a core team that he’s worked with for years, decided to create ONE Styling.

Of course, that’s not to say that launching a new brand in a down economy and crowded market was a cakewalk. “Starting and growing a new company is always a huge undertaking,” Kim states. “But what has been truly inspiring through this whole experience is the realization that this industry is built upon personal relationships. We could never have launched ONE as successfully as we have without the support of our friends in the industry—distributors, salons, stylists, trade publications, suppliers and others.” And if anything, Kim’s passion for the industry is more energized than ever. “At ONE, our mission is to ignite the infinite creativity of stylists by empowering them with the world’s most innovative styling tools,” he enthuses.

And when he says it’s all about the stylist, he means it. Not only has Kim developed the tools based on stylist feedback, but he’s also encouraging you to help with his marketing campaign. Simply log on to the website and upload a picture of yourself and a style you created, indicate the tool you used, and select a tagline to share your work with the styling community. Ultimately, what inspires Kim is a love and enthusiasm for technology—and that’s not just relegated to the beauty industry. “I have a passion for high-performance sports cars,” Kim laughs. “I love to race them, study them, tune them, modify them and collect them—part of my quest to build the ultimate street racer.” Cars aside, Kim asserts that passionate people continually move him. He says with a grin: “That’s why I’m drawn to the beauty industry and the work of great stylists.”
